Overdue picture update

February 2010:

New turtle owner? Need a quick list of supplies quick? Basic/Simple

This is a quick list if you just got an aquatic turtle and need supplies. These items should  likely be in any pet store.  A pretty basic setup that is easy to put together and shop for at a Petsmart, Petco or regular chain pet shop (the prices are estimated but pretty accurate).

*Keep in mind I’m making this list for a 10 -20 gallon aquarium/setup

Heater: Marineland Visi Therm ($30)

Clamp Lamp: Flukers clamp lamp ($15)

UVA heat bulb: any you can find in your home, they sell it at petstores but they are basically the same ones you have in any light you have at home (50 – 75 watts in best, just don’t put it too close to your turtle basking site – minimum 8 – 12 inches away)

Dock: Zoo Med Turtle Dock ($15)

Filter: Tetra Whisper Filter ($30-35)

Food: Reptomin (dependent on what size container you buy, if it’s a baby turtle I recommend a $3 baby Reptomin in 2 oz bottle, you can also get Wardley Turtle sticks, but Reptomin is high quality, very popular and readily available)

A wonderfully informative and interesting site with articles.  Many probably know about this site already.  I rate this as one of the best sources of information for turtle keepers next to redearslider.com, which has a fantastic and helpful forum (probably the best of the 4 or 5 out there).

My Turtle’s Pellet Diet

It started with Reptomin baby and Zoo Med hatchling formula, but gradually incorporated first HBH turtle bites, then Rep-Cal and recently Algae wafers.

This does not include Romain lettuce, green and red leaf lettuce and anarachis given  as well as the occasional grape and Tetra Rep. baby shrimp treats I have them once a month.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

My turtles are Wally and Pie – about 1 1/2 years old – southern painted turtles

what is this on wally? he’s always had some variation of this on his plastron

worried about Wally’s shell – pyramiding?

Mating? I think they’re too young though
